In early August, 1291, representatives from three alpine cantons met in a mountain meadow on Lake Lucerne to take an oath of allegiance, an act that later generations would look back on as the founding of Switzerland. Swiss National Day – the celebration of that meeting in the meadow so many years ago – is traditionally celebrated on August 1, but we’re getting started a little early.
