Unfixable Helvetica

Michael Bierut talks to Gary Hustwit about Helvetica in 2006: "…[I]t somehow has this kind of inherent rightness. You know, the rightness of the way the lowercase a meets the curve, the rightness of the way the G has a thing that comes down, the rightness of the way the C strokes are like that instead of like that. I wouldn't have believed that those things actually could be right or wrong as opposed to someone's taste, yet you have 50 years of history of the thing just sitting there daring people to fix it. It seems to be unfixable." [...]

Give Thanks for Helvetica

Every Thanksgiving, my family takes turns around the table giving thanks. My grandmother gives thanks for good health. My aunt gives thanks for friends and family. And I give thanks for geometric sans serif typefaces from Switzerland. Does that sound like you? We can give you something more to be thankful for: the Helveticahaus Holiday Sale. Now until the end of the year, all shirts are only $19.57 and all coasters are only $6.57. And don’t even get us started about our gift certificates, the perfect gift for that hard-to-shop-for designer. We just gave you three more things to be [...]

By Designers, For Designers

We're well into autumn, which means something different to everyone. To some it means changing leaves. To others it means pumpkin spice lattes. But to us, it means the beginning of another school year at Spokane Falls Community College, Eastern Washington University, and North Idaho College. You see, here at Helveticahaus, all of our profits go towards funding scholarships for design students at these three local schools. Every penny you spend goes towards helping a young designer achieve their dreams. But that's not all. Our commitment to working with young designers goes beyond money. Take, for example, our new Hh [...]

Helveticahaus Behind the Scenes

We recently made a music video. It's pretty great. You should go watch it. No really, I'll wait. The video was super fun to make. We teamed up with local production house Mojo Lab and shot the whole thing over the weekend in beautiful downtown Spokane. Here's a look behind the scenes. We woke up super early to catch that beautiful morning light. We're pretty sure it was worth it.  Chris and Kevin shoot while CK art directs. Haley was such a trooper. We waited in this alley for a train to pass, then Haley would run [...]

Helveticahaus Heads Downtown

We’re not really sure how it all started, but the fact remains that we made a music video, and it’s rad. Shot over a weekend in the beautiful city that we call home, Helveticahaus hit the streets, spreading style and dance moves throughout downtown Spokane. And you thought that Macklemore video was cool. The video features all 14 Hh Tts, original music by Kevin Graham, production wizardry by Mojo Lab, animation awesomeness by Digital Itch, and some groovy dance moves (Tanzbewegungen) from Haley Anderson. In short, it’s got it all. Just go watch it already.Want the latest Hh news delivered [...]

Vignelli Inspired, Student Designed

Our region’s colleges turn out some pretty great talent – I mean, look at us – which is why we felt reasonably confident when we turned to SFCC’s first-year graphic design students and asked them to take a whack at designing a Helveticahaus Tt. We saw tons of great concepts, but one in particular kept jumping out at us. In a design that’s clean and precise enough to impress Massimo Vignelli himself, Margeux Kliewer created an homage to the NYC Subway signage system. We call it Hh Train. Unlike the real HH Train – which operated in Brooklyn for only [...]
